Technology has blown past our dedicated servers, and we are moving everyone’s websites to a higher performance platform.
We are moving to the Google Cloud!
The benefits of moving to the Google Cloud are enormous.
Speed. My site, which is bloated with video and a ton of applications, now loads in 25% of the time that it took prior to the move (we’ve been running for 2 months now on the Google Cloud) Speed is one of the larger Search criteria, so speed = happier web visitors and speed = better search strength.
Security. I doubt that anyone on the planet, has computing power like Google. They also have massive infrastructure in place to protect their computing power. I’ve actually been advised to turn off our internal viral and malware scanning, as it is insignificant next to what Google runs, and could cause conflicts. Our sites will be far more secure from outside attack. Now that we don’t need to use our server’s overhead to run security applications (or caching, or CDN’s) sites should run even faster, and there’s several less applications that need to be maintained on every site.
Scalability. As the number of sites, that we host grows, as the sites get more complex, as more visitors come, with a dedicated server, you slow down, which is why we over-bought our dedicated servers in terms of performance. With the Google Cloud, Google simply provides more and more computing power as needed, or storage as needed, or bandwidth as needed. In theory, we should never have to move sites again due to growth or technology advances.
“In the family”. While there is yet to be any empirical evidence to support this, it is rational to believe that if you want Google Search to play well with you, the deeper you are involved in the Google Ecosystem, the more likely it is that Google will play well with you. We host video on YouTube for exactly the same reason – it’s a Google product. So, as many ways as we can participate within the Google ecosystem, the better I personally believe we will do in search.
The only downside to this move is that it has taken me an entire week to prep everyone’s site for the move, and the expense of living on the Google Cloud. Google Cloud is going to be more expensive for us. At the moment, we are not intending to adjust our monthly maintenance fees. We “may” have to revisit that a few months down the road when we see just how much more expensive Google Cloud is going to be.
